What You Need Before Starting

Understand the Indicator Light (So You Know What’s Happening)

Exact colors can vary slightly by model, but many Xiaomi extenders follow a pattern like this:

Yellow (solid): starting up
Yellow (flashing): waiting for initialization / ready to pair
Blue (solid): working normally / connected successfully
Blue (flashing): updating in progress
Red (flashing): hardware error or abnormal state

If you’re unsure, treat flashing yellow as “ready to set up,” and solid blue as “setup complete.”

Step 1: Plug In Near the Router (Recommended)

Plug the repeater into a wall outlet within a few meters of the router.
Wait until the indicator shows pairing-ready status (commonly flashing yellow).
Keep the phone near the router too—setup is faster and more stable here.

Why near the router?
Because the repeater must first learn your Wi-Fi details with a strong signal. After pairing, you can move it.

Step 2: Reset to Pairing Mode (If It’s Not New)

If the repeater was used before (or behaves strangely), reset it:

Find the Reset button (often a small pinhole).
Use a pin/paperclip and press and hold for at least 5 seconds.
Release when the indicator changes to a reset/pairing state (often yellow).
Wait until it returns to flashing yellow (ready for setup).

Resetting avoids common issues like “device not found” or connecting to an old network.

Step 3: Add the Repeater in Mi Home / Xiaomi Home (Android)

Follow this flow inside the app (labels may vary slightly by region/version):

Open Mi Home / Xiaomi Home.
Tap Add device (usually a “+” button).
Choose your device category (Network / Router / Wi-Fi Repeater) or use search to find:

When prompted, confirm the repeater is in pairing mode (flashing yellow).

Once pairing is complete (commonly solid blue), you can relocate the repeater.

The placement rule that prevents slow speed

Place it between the router and the weak area, where the repeater still receives a strong router signal.

Avoid these spots:

inside cabinets
behind TVs or large electronics
near microwaves or cordless phone bases
next to thick concrete columns, metal shelves, mirrors, or water tanks

Fast placement method

Start halfway between router and the dead zone.
Plug in and wait 1–3 minutes.
Test internet in the problem room.
If speed is poor, move the repeater one wall closer to the router and retest.

Helpful tip: Many Xiaomi repeaters allow you to move them after pairing without reconfiguring again, as long as you stay within workable signal range.

Step 5: Confirm Connection and Check Clients

In Mi Home / Xiaomi Home, open the repeater device page and verify:

Status: online / connected
Signal quality: not “weak”
Connected clients: your phone/TV/laptop appears when connected through the repeater

If your phone keeps using the router instead of the repeater

Try one of these:

Toggle Wi-Fi off/on on Android to force a better connection.
Move slightly closer to the repeater and reconnect.
Consider using a repeater SSID that’s easy to identify (if your model/app offers naming control).

Optional: Improve Performance After Setup

A. Choose the best band (if your model supports dual band)

2.4 GHz: better range through walls, often more stable at distance
5 GHz: faster, but weaker through walls

Use the band that stays consistent where you actually use Wi-Fi—stable beats “fast for 10 seconds.”

B. Reduce interference

Keep the repeater away from heavy electronics and microwave ovens.
If you live in a crowded apartment building, consider changing your router’s 2.4 GHz channel and then restart the router and repeater.

C. Ethernet port (AC1200 models)

If your Xiaomi repeater has an Ethernet port, you may be able to connect a wired device (like a smart TV or PC) for improved stability in that room—useful when Wi-Fi is crowded.

Troubleshooting: Common Setup Problems and Fixes

Problem 1: “Device not found” in the app

Try this sequence:

Make sure LED is flashing yellow (pairing mode).
Reset again (hold reset ≥ 5 seconds).
Move closer to the router.
Turn off mobile data temporarily (some phones behave better during pairing).
